About Blacksmithing
Smithing is a traditional craft that has been present throughout history for over six thousand years and has changed very little in that time. The process of Blacksmithing involves heating iron or steel in a forge until it reaches such a high temperature it begins to glow. This glow varies from a dull red at a relatively low temperature, right through to a brilliant white at the metals very hottest point. At the correct temperature the metal is hand hammered and can be bent, elongated, split, curled and twisted all of which are highly skilled and carefully timed procedures. The Blacksmith controls the flow of air into the forge with bellows, or more commonly today an electric air pump. This controls the ferocity of the fire and thus how hot the metal becomes. Getting the correct temperature is an essential part of smithing. Once the metal has reached the correct temperature the smith places it on the anvil using metal tongs and begins to forge it into the desired shape with a hammer. With large items of intricate designs this process can take many hours or even days to complete.
About the Blacksmith
Leicestershire based Artist Blacksmith Alex McLean has exhibited and won prizes for his forge work at The Royal Show, The Welsh Royal Show, The Great Yorkshire Show and The Three Counties Show. He studied the art of Blacksmithing and design at Warwickshire College and after qualifying now works at The Old Forge in the beautiful rose gardens, Stanford Hall near Lutterworth, Leicestershire.
